Male as Primary Caregiver Interview This interview should be conducted ONLY with a male who is the PRIMARY care-provider, ie the “stay-at-home-Dad” in a family Format: In your paper, you should begin by providing a brief background of your interviewee. Age, number of children, marital status, previous work experience, current work schedule, etc. Write a well-organized 5-8 page paper in which you summarize the effects of gender stereotypes on your interviewee’s chosen lifestyle, including at least three themes from class. Be sure to use proper citation formats and include a list of references. The use of quotations from interviewees is encouraged. After the introduction your paper should be organized around at least 3 themes from class. Examples of themes include: gender prisms, culture, buying and selling gender, sex segregation, harassment, discrimination, gender in intimate relationships, work/family conflict, women’s work vs. men’s work, glass ceiling, inclusion and exclusion, sex discrimination, etc. You should describe how these themes were (or were not) relevant in the work experience of your interviewee. It would be effective if you mentioned specific themes/readings and connected them to your findings. For example, “Doucet (2007) stated that even when fathers do stay home, they remain very ‘connected to traditionally masculine sources of identity such as part-time paid work, unpaid masculine self-provisioning work, and community work that builds on traditional male interests.’ My interviewee with Joe revealed that he continued to work as a “consultant” to his previous employer. He stated that he was “not ready to quit altogether”. Use quotes from interviewees. This keeps the interview interesting and helps me to get a sense of how the interviewee felt about his job. Summarize or conclude your interview by talking about how this person’s overall experience is consistent or inconsistent with research on men/women in a gender traditional/non-traditional occupation. Introduction (1-2 pages) including background as stated above Discussion of relevant themes from class as related to interview (3-4 pages) Conclusion (1-2 pages). Summarize as discussed above. Make sure to change the name of your interviewee.
