M8 Assignment with Discussion
For this module, you will need to obtain more data. As you did in Module 7, visit the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Data page. Collect data with the same parameters and the same county as you did before but for one thing; this time collect data for 2020. When you download this data, save it to a new Excel file. Then, copy this new data into a new tab in the Excel file you were using for Module 7. Give this new tab a descriptive name, namely “PM 2.5 2020”.
Create another new tab in your Excel file (the same Excel file from your Module 7 Assignment and Discussion) and label it Mod 8. Remember, do not do any work in the tabs that contain raw data (Raw Data tab and PM 2.5 2020 tab).
For this new data, find the total number of days in this data set and find the number of days with a PM2.5 AQI value over 50. Then use these to find the proportion of days for which the air quality was not good in your sample (the proportion of successes).
To perform this statistical analysis, you must first check that the conditions for a two-sample test of proportions are met (found on page 411 of the textbook). Clearly present/check these conditions in the Mod 8 tab. If these conditions are not met for your data set, you will need to claim a new county. In such a case, visit the Module 7 discussion and claim a county that was not already claimed by a classmate, then create main discussion posts to claim that county in the Module 7 discussion and also in the Module 8 discussion. You cannot receive credit for a county that has already been claimed in Module 7 or Module 8.
Within the Mod 8 tab of your Excel file, perform and present a four-step hypothesis test with
α=0.05
α=0.05 (hypothesize, prepare, compute to compare, and interpret) to test whether the proportion of days which do not have “Good” air quality has decreased (from 2019 to 2020). Insert the StatCrunch results into your Mod 8 tab. Tech Tips for using StatCrunch can be found at the end of Chapter 8.
Your main discussion post should have a descriptive title/subject, one that includes the name of the county and an appropriate title for what you are presenting. Within that main discussion post, write a single paragraph discussing in non-statistical terms what you tested, the result you found, and propose why that result might be so. This post should be aimed at an audience such as one’s grandmother or a ten-year-old. The formal statistical language should only be in the explanations included within your Excel file in your four-step hypothesis test – not in this summary paragraph you post within the discussion itself. Attach your Excel file to this discussion post.
In addition to your main post, you are to respond to at least two other students’ main posts. Substantive responses to other students’ main posts might include the following: (1) a detailed comparison of your results to their results including proposing why the results might (or might not) differ between your two regions, or (2) detailed and polite recommendations for improvements should their work be incorrect or not fully meet the assignment’s requirements.
Grading for this assignment will be based on the Discussion Participation Rubric in the Course Information Tab.
