Literary MonstersProject This project requires you to choose an American literary text (novel or short story) you have read in which monsters appear (Stephen King stuff!). Focus on the representation of the monstrous in it. Begin with analyzing those aspects of the representation that the author uses to demarcate the boundary between the “normal” and the “hideous,” including physical features, locale, kind of language used by the monster, and the other so-called peculiarities that make someone/something monstrous. From there move on to contextualizing the monster, asking why this or that particular monster at this or that particular point in history. Finally, have a close look at the cultural work that the monster is meant to do. What kind of injustice is the monster pointing to by way of his/her/its victimhood? 1. Choose an American novel or short story featuring a monster/witch/dracula/vampire/zombie/alien etc. not older than 30 years (Frankenstein is a British text, believe me!). 2. Describe how the monster is represented in the text – physical features, linguistic peculiarities, habitat, and all other details that make it “monstrous.” You must quote directly from the text to substantiate your point for each detail. 3. Where does the author draw the boundary between the normal and the abnormal/monstrous. 4. Delineate carefully the cultural function the monster is meant to serve at the time when it was created. 5. You need to cite at least 1 scholarly source THE STORY I HAVE CHOSEN IS “THE MIST” I have attached it below https://wp.nyu.edu/darknessspeaks/wp-content/uploads/sites/3674/2016/04/King-Stephen-The-Mist.pdf
