Step 1: Listen to the following piece in its’ entirety:
Hector Berlioz was a Romantic composer ahead of his time in terms of orchestration, grandeur of thought, and thematic inventiveness. His most famous composition, the Symphonie Fantastique, is a piece of program music that outlines the despair of a young artist in hopeless love. The final two movements depict the hero’s death by execution and a diabolical scene where he is surrounded by witches, one of whom represents his beloved, now tormenting him.
Step 2: Compose Your Essay:
After listening to the video above, in its entirety, write a 20-22 line essay (Double-spaced using 12 point font only), in Microsoft Word, about your impressions of the work.
You may briefly discuss the historical context of the piece, but the essay should consist primarily of your own impressions about it. Feel free to use any relevant music terminology you have learned in your reading.
