This assignment is the first part of a two-part research assignment. In this assignment, students are expected to brainstorm an original research topic of their choosing (on Hip Hop culture – meaning, any of the four pillars of the culture: rapping, deejaying, breaking or graffiti writing) within a distinct periodization. Please ensure that this is a topic is of interest to you and that you are willing to do extensive research on (and where you determine there are extensive resources available to support your research efforts). The goal of a research proposal is to present and justify the need to study a research subject and to present the practical ways in which the proposed study will be conducted.
The objective of this exercise is to:
(1) design an original research project and research question
(2) provide a rational for the study
(3) determine an appropriate methodological approach to the proposed research project
(4) assemble a list of primary and secondary source materials that will be used for this study
All research proposals must address the following questions:
1. What is the topic? Be clear and succinct in defining the research topic, periodization, geographical space, and the research question.
2. Why study this topic? In addition to detailing the research design, students must also explain why this is a topic worthy of study.
3. How will this study be pursued? Be sure that the study that has been proposed is a doable project. That is, indicate what the essay themes will be, what methodology will be used, what type of primary sources will be used, and what secondary source items will be used to support the primary source analysis.
Proposals should include:
• The details of a do-able topic (that address time period and geography)
• A paragraph that includes a short descriiption of the topic and why this topic is of interest
• A research question (the major question that the project will answer)
• The paper’s major themes and the methodological approach that will be used
• A list of primary sources that will be used as evidence (a minimum of five primary sources, and a minimum of two different primary source varieties)
• A list the secondary sources that will be referenced in support of your primary source analysis (a minimum of four primary sources – 2 books published by an academic press and 2 journal articles)
• An explanation of how the primary and secondary sources will help answer the paper’s research questions
