Learning Goal: I’m working on a psychology report and need a sample draft to help me learn.Abnormal behavior is a consistently popular subject for feature films; practically every disorder ever identified has been portrayed at one time or another. For this assignment, students will write a paper analyzing a character’s illness in terms of the causes and symptoms presented in the textbook. If applicable, students should describe any treatment received by the character and also comment on whether they would recommend a similar or different treatment. All of the films suggested below contain excellent depictions of psychological disorder and should make good choices for this assignment. Note that a few of the films are also noteworthy for their portrayal of the therapeutic process. The assignment you choose must include a Title/Cover Page stating specifically which assignment/project you chose (not following this requirement can result in a penalty ranging from 5 – 0 points).
The assignment must be submitted as a Word Document. It must be typed, double spaced with a minimum of four (4) pages (-5 points will be deducted for each assignment not double spaced and/or do not meet the minimum of three pages).
You must cite sources used and submit a reference page. Information from the textbook and other sources must be cited using the format of the American Psychological Association (APA) with the body of your paper. It is recommended that you have a minimum of 3 references. References are required for all projects. At a minimum, you need to cite your textbook as a source.
Falling Down (1992). The pressures of big city life can anger anyone. But Bill Foster (Michael Douglas) is more than angry. He’s out to get even. Foster, an ordinary guy at war with the frustrations of daily living. Robert Duvall is the savvy cop obsessed with stopping Foster’s citywide rampage.
A beautiful Mind (2002). Russel Crowe stars is an astonishing performance as brilliant mathematician John Nash. Nash is on the brink of international acclaim when he becomes entangled in a mysterious conspiracy. Now, only his devoted wife can help him in the powerful story of courage, passion, and triumph.
Nuts (1987). Barbra Streisand and Richard Dreyfuss star in this compelling psychological drama. Streisand plays a strong-willed prostitute charged with murdering a client who, against the wishes of her lawyer (Dreyfuss) and her family, refuses to plead “guilty by reason of insanity.”
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975). Jack Nicholson stars in this moving drama as Randall P. McMurphy, a rebellious prisoner who stirs things up in a mental hospital after his transfer there. In going head to head with the authoritarian Nurse Ratchet, he revives the spirit of the other patients who have been browbeaten into submission by the institution. Although somewhat dated and stereotypical, this surprisingly entertaining film portrays a wide variety of deviant behavior and also highlights controversial therapeutic techniques (e.g., prefrontal lobotomy, electroconvulsive therapy), depicts the often inhumane conditions in mental institutions, and contains fascinating character studies of McMurphy and the other patients.
Frankie & Alice (2010). Halle Berry stars in this drama inspired by the remarkable true strory of an African American go-go dancer “Frankie” with multiple personalities (dissociative identity disorder or ‘DID”) who struggles to remain her true self while fighting against two unique alter egos.
• As Good As It Gets (1997). Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt star in this tale of obsession, compulsion, and asthma. Nicholson and Hunt received Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, for this film, so it’s pretty good, eh?
