In “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates (307-321), knowing a bit more about social/historical context helps to understand her motivation for writing this disturbing and ambiguous story. This story is based on the serial killer Charles Schmidt called the “Pied Piper” who would murder his victims and bury their bodies in the desert. Once you research this person, you will see the similarities to Arnold Friend from Oates’s story. Does knowing this information help to clarify what happens to Connie at the end of this story?
