Key details
This assessment is worth 50% of the overall module mark.
The word limit is 2,000 words (not including references).
Guidance
Choose a topic about children’s geographies or the geographies of education that interests you. This could be an area we have covered in the lectures already, but it could also be an area we have not covered. If you are unsure of your topic area, please speak to Sophie or Peter.
You will then write two reflective pieces (‘vignettes’) based on your own experiences of that topic. You could look back to the past, or write about your current experiences (e.g. as a University student). These will be framed by analyses (‘narratives’) where you link your experiences to academic literatures on your chosen topic.
Your assignment should be structured as follows:
Introduction to your topic, including a succinct review of recent literature in the field (400 words)
Vignette 1 – a reflective vignette based on your own childhood in relation to the theme. This should be written in the first person and be based on a specific moment / memory (100 words)
Narrative 1 – link your vignette to current literatures/debates in Children’s Geographies/Geographies of Education about your chosen topic. (550 words)
Vignette 2 – a second reflective vignette based on a different moment / memory or aspect of your experiences (100 words)
Narrative 2 – a second narrative linking your vignette to the literature (550 words)
Summary – a concluding section tying together your experiences and the literature with an emphasis on what personal vignettes, and looking back on childhood can offer to children’s geography (300 words).
Other points to note
Although the overall word count is set, the word counts for each section are indicative
Please follow this structure but be creative with your section headings
Photographs may be used to support your vignettes
