Pioneers of Sociology
German sociologist Max Webber is best known for the bureaucratic theory. Paved the way for what we know today as sociology and social research and theories with his theories such as the “protestant ethic.” (Knox, 2019) The bureaucratic theory has five principles: Authority Hierarchy, Division of Labor, Formal Rules and Regulations, Career Orientation, Impersonality, and Formal Selection. All these principles play a big role; in theory, each is its component to the concept. In an Authority Hierarchy, positions have a clear chain of command. Next, we have division labor and formal rules. Formal rules are standard procedures, and systems are followed correctly. Division labor complex is work that is simplified. Then, career orientation which refers to managers, is career originated. In comparison, impersonality refers to uniform rules without considering one’s personality. Lastly, we have a formal selection which means that your job selection is based on technical qualifications. (“Bureaucracy”, 2021) Despite this, a bible verse related to the bureaucracy theory is, “It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. 18 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. 19 Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God.” (“Bible Gateway passage: 2 Kings 19:17-19 – New International Version”, 2011)
A biblical principle that follows this is Christian character, which referrers to our behavior and Christian character that the bible establishes. Although Christian character may be about oneself and others, the bureaucratic theory is about running an organization. Additionally, the biblical principle is all about having the Lordship of Christ in our lives and our thoughts constantly, similar to Mr. Weber’s theory of management which is formal rules and a system that goes by orders. Similarly, in Christianity, we have a set of rules, and both principles have rules that keep the system working; without all the steps, it would not work properly. (“Biblical Principles”, 2009).
