Readerly Expectations
Your reader expects you to deliver a written analysis of the potential messages the place sends. They expect to see some evidence offered in support of your claims about the space, and they expect to be able to use your analysis to make a change, if they need to, in the space. Therefore, you will want to begin to think about how you can best deliver this information.
In general, readers expect compositions to be unified, coherent, and significant.
Unity
When a text is unified, it focuses all its claims, evidence, and details towards a central controlling idea. In the case of a rhetorical analysis of a place, your central controlling idea should be aimed at the message the space appears to send.
Coherence
Coherence has to do with how the parts of a composition work together towards a unified focus. If it is not easy for a reader to see how the elements of the space you have chosen to discuss related to the central controlling idea, then your paper will feel incoherent.
Significance
It seems obvious to say, but readers expect what they read to matter to them and to others. In this writing scenario, your client absolutely must feel that what you have written is important and meaningful. But what would count as “important and meaningful” in this scenario? It is likely that clients would find your analysis important and significant if it is insightful and practical. In other words, they will find what you have written more meaningful if they couldn’t have come up with it themselves–what you discuss isn’t obvious to them–and if they can do something with your analysis.
Spend a few minutes answering these questions about unity, coherence, and significance, and submit your answers to the dropbox below.
Unity
What is the main thing that you want your clients to know? Explain what it is and how you came to this conclusion.
Coherence
What are the key pieces of evidence that you will point to when making the main point you mentioned above? Why are they the key pieces? Is there any other way of interpreting them? How will you address these counter-interpretations?
Significance
Why will what you say to your clients matter? Will they know what to do if they want to change the message? Will they know what to do if they want to keep the message or enhance it?
