Instructions:
1. Locate at least three texts that enable you to enter the existing “Conversation” on the
comparative essay that you will write. These texts should help you extend or complicate your
themes/Idea for this portfolio.
A. Category One: at least one text that introduces, extends, or complicates your thinking in
terms of the apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fiction genre. What is the apocalypse and why
is it an appropriate form for this story? Is there another genre to be considered?
B. Category Two: at least one text that extends or complicates your analysis of one or both
texts. This text may explore your author’s style or purpose, or it could examine your overall
Idea in an interdisciplinary context such as philosophy or sociology. All the texts touch on
current events and issues. Use creative search terms and investigate how people are thinking
and writing about your paper’s themes.
C. At least one more text that fits into either or both categories.
2. At least two of these sources must be academic, peer-reviewed texts locatable via York Library
resources. Other acceptable sources might be a professional review from a major newspaper, a
relevant interview with the author, or a third well-known literary source on the apocalypse, such
as T.S. Eliot’s poetry. Lectures, model essays, Professor Sufrin’s dissertation, and/or one of the
six apocalyptic short stories cannot serve as official sources but cite these if you use them.
3. Compose a submission that:
A. Includes your current epigraph (properly cited in MLA). You may use song lyrics or no
more than four lines of poetry or two sentences of prose. Your epigraph should reflect your
thesis and your Idea.
B. Your working thesis (what/why statements). You may compose an introductory paragraph if
you wish feedback on your Idea.
C. Provides, in sequence, the following for each text:
o the full, correct citation in MLA format.
o a ~250-word annotation concerning how you will use this source, properly
formatted. Make reference to how this source will help explore your argument / Idea
and include a short summary synthesizing the main themes/argument of your source.
I have attached 4 pages of the assignment as an example.
