Initial responses should address the following questions in a post of at least 150 words:
As you enter Week 8, please reflect on the following in a thoughtful and detailed initial post:
React to the readings. Was there a particular topic from this week’s readings, web links, or videos that struck you as interesting, relevant, compelling? Why? Be specific. Cite the reading, website, or video clip in your post. For example: do certain concepts relate to your own professional or personal lived experiences? Are there terms or ideas that were unclear that you’d like more info on? These are just guidelines, but the goal is is for you to react in an intellectual way to something new you learned.
Chapter 8 discusses judicial independence, as well as the processes for evaluating, disciplining, and removing judges from their positions. Read this Salem News article (Links to an external site.) about Salem Superior Court Judge Timothy Feeley and his recent controversial ruling. Was Feeley within his right to sentence this case as he did? Does he deserve to be removed from his position? Why or why not? Further, how important is independence? Is it better if judges can make decisions without political pressure, as we see in states where elections are held?
