In the Thought Paper, you are expected to demonstrate critical and creative thinking skills by writing a brief proposal for a psychological study. In the first weeks of the course you will learn some fundamental features of scientific investigation methods used in psychology. Moreover, throughout the course, you will learn about a number of scientific investigations conducted in various areas in psychology, as well as learning about their important methodological features.
Therefore, over the course of this term, you are expected to obtain and demonstrate the ability to identify, understand, and devise adequate scientific methodologies to inquire about human behavior. To assess this particular learning outcome, this course requires you to submit a Thought Paper.
In your Thought Paper, you will briefly “propose” a psychological experiment that can answer your chosen research question. Below, you will find a list of potential research questions you can choose to work with. You can come up with your own idea but check with the professor to make sure it is a good choice by completing the Thought Paper Preparation Assignment or contacting him or the TA directly via email. Using the knowledge and skills obtained from this course, you are expected to demonstrate the ability to critically and creatively think about the research question, by defining the research question, formulating a study hypothesis, proposing appropriate research methods to test the hypothesis, and drawing logical conclusions based on anticipated findings.
Students are NOT to attempt to perform this research! True research proposals are typically much more exhaustive (more than a dozen pages in length) and must be approved by the University before they can be put into action. Thus, it would be a violation of University policies for students to attempt to execute these research proposals… DON’T DO IT!
The purpose of this assignment is not to DO the research, but for you to demonstrate that you can use what you have been learning in this course to develop a novel idea of your own.
I am providing a brief set of additional instructions on how to set up your thought paper that you may use to guide your own work. The sample not only illustrates how a good thought paper would look, but contains many comments that help to instruct you on both content and formatting of your paper. You should find it VERY useful.
There is also a template Download templatefor those that wish to use it. The template can help to ensure that you are getting everything you need to in the paper.
Lastly, you should review the grading rubric Download grading rubricthat will be used to evaluate your work.
Thought Paper Requirements:
The length of the Thought Paper form should be at least 750 words. I am flexible on the maximum (you can go long, and your paper will probably be better if you do) but NOT on the minimum.
To support your statements/arguments in the paper, you must cite at least four (4) peer-reviewed Download peer-reviewedjournal articles. You need to list these references at the end of the paper using APA formatting (as in the Thought Paper Preparation Assignment).
This assignment can be submitted to Canvas Dropbox at any time over the course of the semester, but no later than November 21, 2021, 11:59 pm. Late submissions will receive a 10% per day late penalty, to a maximum of 30%. If the paper is more than three days late, it receives NO credit.
To encourage students to finish early, if the assignment is submitted by November 14, 2021, 11:59 pm it will get a 10% bonus (14 points)!
Make sure the Thought Paper is your own work. Do not plagiarize existing work or represent another person’s work as your own.
Once the paper is ready for submission, place it in the dropbox for the assignment. It must be a Microsoft Word document.
Sample Questions for Thought Paper:
Below is a list of sample research questions you may choose to demonstrate your ability to devise an experiment. You do NOT need to use these ideas: you may formulate your own research question for the Thought Paper (it might be wise to check with the professor to make sure the topic is acceptable for this psychology class). The study design must be experimental or correlational in nature (i.e., a case study or a simple survey study will not get you full points on this assignment).
