In the 1820s and 30s, Americans were pushing the limits of democracy.  While voting (aka suffrage) was a privilege for the few, non-voters found other ways to have their voices heard.  Chapters 11 & 12 (Erick Foner  “Give me Liberty” summary can be found online)  are all about those reform efforts, from anti-slavery to utopian society building, education, care for the mentally ill, prison reform, woman’s rights and personal freedom, and workers’ rights and the labor movement.
