Module 3: Accountability and Transparency in Business
In recent years, much emphasis has been placed on corporate governance and accountability. Accordingly, organizations are being held to a higher standard of accountability. Corporations, government organizations, and nonprofit organizations must demonstrate accountability to the public, shareholders, and other stakeholders. This accountability goes beyond financial accountability; it’s a moral relationship which includes components of delegation, responsibility, legitimacy, and ethics. There have been numerous scandals in recent years but most notable are the Enron Scandal in 2001 and the Volkswagen Scandal in 2015. Organizations and regulatory agencies have learned many corporate governance lessons from these two scandals in particular. These and other corporate scandals have also highlighted the need for organizations to be more transparent. In fact, an objective of many proposed corporate governance reforms is increased transparency.
