Impersonation – Writing Assignment XI
What would some of the great thinkers from the past have to say about something going on today? Would they agree with it? Be afraid of it? Would they think that we are being overdramatic about certain things and less weary of things they would find important? Impersonation is an exercise where you are going to imitate the Ethos and style of someone from the past commenting on a current issue.
Compose lines for a person, real or imaginary, dead or living, to speak under given circumstances. Dramatize through direct speech, using description and emotional language where appropriate, fitting the speech to the character of the speaker and the circumstances.
One should compose the impersonation in the style in which the character would speak, considering:
clarity
conciseness
An example of this is – how would Martin Luther King Jr. respond to today’s political climate? How would one of the founding fathers respond to it?
All responses should be roughly 250 words and should focus on sentence level / grammatical accuracy. Please keep a copy of your graded draft for revisions for your portfolio at the end of the semester.
