Identify the text we’ve read which breaks George Orwell’s rules* with the greatest regularity. Write one body paragraph showing where and explaining how the text has broken each of the rules. Next, briefly, explain your own ideas about what makes good writing. Then, write at least a paragraph saying if the rule breaking in the text you’ve selected means the writing is poor or not. Explain why you think so. Last, read back through what you’ve written and write an introduction for your essay. While I recommend writing it last, this introduction should appear first in your essay.
* Orwell’s rules, a redux:
1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
2. Never use a long word where a short one will do. (Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.)
3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
General notes on the assingment:
Essays are formal/higher-stakes papers due (in draft form) on the dates specified below. Essays should be shared using a web-based word processor (like Word or Google Docs), or emailed as attached files (.doc or .docx files are required). It is best to structure (at least) the first essay in a traditional way (i.e. the first essay should have a clear introduction outlining the thrust of the essay, body paragraphs supporting the introduction, and a clear conclusion summarizing the whole, especially the developments the body paragraphs have made to the introduction). It is best to structure the individual body paragraphs similarly–i.e. individual paragraphs should begin by introducing the point central to the paragraph, make a point, and conclude by summarizing the paragraph’s overall point (see 1-5 under Responses below). Introductions should avoid broad generalities. Succinctness is desirable and wordiness should be avoided.
Essays must be at least 900 words, not counting heading, title, or quotations. Failure to meet this minimum will result in a failing grade. Essays should be set in a twelve-point typeface—Times New Roman or Arial is strongly preferred. Essays should be double-spaced and the text should be justified to the left margin. Margins should be set at one inch (this will be the default setting for most word processors). No lines should be skipped. Headings should consist of four lines including the student’s name, the title of the course, the instructor’s name, and the date of submission. Essays should be titled. Titles should give some indication of the essay’s subject. The title should be justified to the center of the page.
In addition to writing, essays are marked for attention to essay form (see above), strength of argument (or fulfillment of purpose), and revision.
Essays should summarize as little as possible.
Essays must be submitted in draft before being finally submitted.
First drafts should be saved and must be available for submission upon request.
Failure to submit a requested first draft may result in a failing grade for the essay.
The word document attached is my rough draft. You can use that as a base. The other links are the articles you need to find orwells rule breaks on.
