I would like you to create a research project that focuses on a particular topic, subject matter, or theme in regard to art and visual culture. Your goal is to analyze and find connections between a group of artworks, images, objects, artifacts, etc. and facilitate a discussion around a topic or idea in a visual culture where you can use specific examples to help establish, clarify, and support your perspective.
You might choose a direct approach where you compare certain artists, media, styles, periods, etc., or you might be interested in a more exploratory or conceptual approach where you research and describe the significance of particular genres/categories, sociocultural issues, political or global events, etc. Your goal is to make meaningful connections and to look for parallels between works of art or ideas. You will also want to keep in mind and possibly identify any opinions or perspectives that diverge from your own. This project is intentionally open-ended to give you complete freedom and autonomy in designing your research project, selecting examples, and developing overarching questions.
Your project can be composed in the form of a research paper, or it can be completed as a video/multimedia presentation. No matter which option you choose, please make sure to include each of the following parts:
Develop and facilitate a discussion on a particular research question, concept, or theme that includes your individual perspective and ideas as well as those from outside references
Select and analyze at least three artworks, objects, images, artifacts, etc. and describe how they are connected to your research question and establish, clarify, and support your perspective on a topic
Reflect on the implications of these ideas on culture, society, and/or your personal life.
If you are selecting the research paper option, here are some general components to also include and/or consider:
Include a cover page
1-5 pages (not including cover and works cited/references pages), 12 pt. font, double-spaced
I am flexible with the final page count, but the project will generally fall within this range with all the components.
Include a Works Cited or References Page following whichever citation style you might be using.
