I.) Introduction
a. Background: Define the community – What is your community all about? Who is
part of it? Be specific.
b. Background: Define the health issue – What is it? What is the scope of the issue
(i.e. how big is the problem?)
c. Background: Why is this health issue problematic? What factors cause the health
issue in that community?
i. Thesis: State your community, the health issue, and characterize the
impact of the health issue. In other words, how is the health issue affecting
your community? What is it preventing them from doing?
Example: Mental illnesses like Anxiety and Depression are
impacting college students’ ability to complete their education
and form meaningful relationships.
[DO NOT COPY THIS THESIS: Write your own original thesis!]
II.) Body Paragraph I (Physical consequences of the health issue):
a. A (Assertion): State one specific physical consequence that the community faces
as a result of the health issue.
b. X (eXample): Bring in a scholarly journal article to support your assertion (i.e. one
source that discusses the physical consequence). Briefly summarize the article and
properly integrate a quote from the article.
c. E (Explanation): Explain the quote you have selected from the source. What
information does it contribute to your topic? What does it show the reader about
the physical consequence?
d. S (Significance): What impact does the physical consequence have on the
community?
III.) Body Paragraph II (Social consequences of the health issue):
a. A (Assertion): State one specific social consequence that the community faces as a
result of the health issue.
b. X (eXample): Bring in a scholarly journal article to support your assertion (i.e. one
source that discusses the social consequence). Briefly summarize the article and
properly integrate a quote from the article.
c. E (Explanation): Explain the quote you have selected from the source. What
information does it contribute to your topic? What does it show the reader about
the social consequence?
d. S (Significance): What impact does the social consequence have on the
community?
IV.) Body Paragraph III (Psychological consequences of the health issue):
a. A (Assertion): State one specific psychological consequence that the community
faces as a result of the health issue.
b. X (eXample): Bring in a scholarly journal article to support your assertion (i.e. one
source that discusses the psychological consequence). Briefly summarize the
article and properly integrate a quote from the article.
c. E (Explanation): Explain the quote you have selected from the source. What
information does it contribute to your topic? What does it show the reader about
the psychological consequence?
d. S (Significance): What impact does the psychological consequence have on the
community?
V.) Conclusion:
a. Wrap up your essay in a meaningful, non-repetitive way
b. Propose a solution for the issue!
i. What does the solution look like?
ii. How should the solution be implemented?
iii. What effect will the solution have for the community?
c. Answer the “So What” question. Why does this topic matter?
Notes:
 You can have up to two body paragraphs to fully discuss each consequence (i.e., social,
physical, psychological)
 The order of body paragraphs can be moved around. You do not have to start with
physical consequences.
 Remember to properly introduce each source and avoid quote-dumping.
 Optional: If your topic is really complex and needs more background, you are welcome
to include an additional background paragraph after the introduction.
 You are welcome to use non-scholarly sources only IN ADDITION to three scholarly
journal articles.
