Address one (1) of the following scenarios in detail, utilizing textual material (Chapters One through Eight) and your own opinion and analysis in your answers. I am interested in your knowledge and mastery of the material as you apply it to the scenarios, as well as your analysis of the appropriate issues. You do NOT need to incorporate any outside sources into your answers, except the textbook. When you do utilize material from the textbook, be sure to cite appropriately in APA format providing both in-text citations and a separate reference page. Your essay/exam should be presented in essay format and flow as such. Do NOT provide lists or bullet points. Your essay should be roughly four (4) to six (6) double-spaced pages in Word, not counting title and reference pages. You are the newly-hired Chief of Police of a mid-sized Midwestern city. The community has an unusually high crime and murder rate, the city’s budget is strained and the police force has experienced budgetary cuts for the past several years, and officers have not received a pay raise in three years. Furthermore, due to the previous chief’s lack-of-leadership and management, the organization of the department is in disarray. Compounding this difficult situation, departmental morale is at an all-time low, good officers are threatening to resign, and departmental communication is deplorable and distrustful of the new administration. As Chief, how do you address these problems, specifically? Develop an action plan for improving leadership, morale, working conditions, and organizational communication. Be detailed, be creative, but be realistic. Utilize textual material to supplement your answer. Your answer should be roughly 4-6 double-spaced pages in Word (not counting title and reference pages).

You are the new Supervisor of a team of State Parole and Probation Officers who manage and oversee thousands of cases. The department has experienced heavy staff turnover, budgetary cuts, an intense case backlog, and a stoppage to overtime pay. Morale is low while caseload is increasing. You meet with your agents to get a better sense of the agency and to receive input about how to improve the team. They understand very well the budgetary constraints and your inability to give them raises. However, they would like some flexibility in their jobs, work schedules, etc…It is your task to offer a detailed work and job redesign plan to offer your agents this flexibility. Your plan should address their job motivations and specific strategies to improve flexibility, which will improve productivity, output, and worker satisfaction.
