I‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍nstructions from instructor: Please read the short stories “Shiloh” and “The Story of an Hour” and compose a block-style (AAA, BBB) response essay that compares and contrasts major elements of the two stories. Try to find at least FIVE points of comparison and FIVE points of contrast (in other words, five ways in which the stories are similar and five in which they differ.) Also, look for original, non-obvious points. For example, both stories feature female protagonists: that’s too obvious. Dig a little deeper. What about these women can we compare? Their socio-economic status? The time period in which the authors were writing, and the expectations of women‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ in each era? Look beyond the surface elements and explore the depths of these female-driven stories and what the authors have to say about the characters and how they live. Remember, block style (AAA, BBB) will contain a body paragraph about one story, then another paragraph about the other. In other words, don’t create a point-by-point essay (AB AB AB) in which you discuss both stories simultaneously. Once you’ve covered “Shiloh,” for instance, end that paragraph and begin a new one that concerns only “The Story of an Hour.” Then use your conclusion to make connections between the stories. Including your introduction, you should have four total paragraphs‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍.
