The first essay in this course is a mini-essay, only 3 pages long<
<
Listen to a short clip from stand-up comedian Peter White (it’s less than five minutes; watch it more than once) that is linked in our first week’s unit.<
<
Then, read “Changing Minds, One Joke at a Time: Can Comedy Bring Social Change?” by Yashasvini Mathur in Culture-Vulture (also linked in our first week’s unit). <
<
The mini-essay will ask you to answer the following question: what do you think Peter White is trying to comment on in his short bit?<
<
Note: you should not assert whether you agree or disagree with White’s perspectives—and I’m certainly not asking you to like or dislike what he says, or for you to find him funny, etc. What I want you to do is analyze his jokes: what cultural practices or behaviors/trends is he saying something about through humor, and what exactly is it that he is saying? Is he trying to convince listeners to realize/believe/understand something in particular?<
<
The mini-essay should attempt to utilize quotes from White’s set (again, you’ll need to watch a few times, probably), as well as some material from Mathur’s essay. You should provide a citation for each in a works cited page<
<
The final draft of this essay should be 2-3 double-spaced pages, meaning you mst have content on the third page.<
