Hello, first I want you to read all those chapter 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11 and then pick up a topic from the following: the link for the book is: https://ca1lib.org/book/16528521/772a41 YOU MUST READ THOSE CHAPTERS AND THEN CHOOSE A TOPIC. the topic you only choose one:
1. Discuss the extent to which Canada has moved forward on reconciliation efforts with First Nations peoples. What evidence can you draw on from the text and current news? How can the federal government build partnerships and renewed relationships with Indigenous peoples (e.g Pipeline Politics; Proper Housing and Infrastructure for First Nations Communities; self-government; MMIWG…?) Discuss by drawing on themes from the text, lectures and current events.
2. According to the Communications Security Establishment (one of Canada’s key security and intelligence organizations), fake tweets, fake news, fake vids and other foreign-based hacktivists pose a threat to Canada’s democracy, and specifically, to 18 the discourse in the media, and to our democratic system. There is also a fear of foreign interference in federal elections. Discuss by drawing on themes from the text, lectures and current events. What are the implications for democracy when some segments of society weaponize social media? How can young people respond?
3. Tossutti et al argue that the right to vote is the cornerstone of a democratic system. However, in the age of social media, protest activities and cyberactivism are the new forms of politics that take traditional interest groups and social movements to another level. How will these forms of political engagement interface with traditional political parties and democratic exercises such as elections? Discuss by drawing on themes from the text, lectures and current events.
4. In recent elections, the electoral turnout among young people has been dismal. You are part of a panel with the task to advise political leaders on how better to engage young people in politics. Your job is to gather data on the voting patterns of young people; discuss why voting among young people is important; analyze the current problems underlying the declining youth vote (e.g., are elected representatives ignoring issues important to youth?); propose workable solutions to reversing the disinterest of young people in electoral politics. Discuss by drawing on themes from the text, lectures and current events.
5. Much has been made about increasing gender representation in politics. Does increasing gender representation make a difference? What is the evidence? What about other under-represented groups (e.g. racialized Canadians? Is representation of Canada’s diverse population in the upper echelons of Canadian politics important? Why or why not? Discuss by drawing on themes from the text, lectures and current events.
6. While young people have not generally been active in formal politics, they tend to be active in social movements. To what extent are social movements effective in changing political policies? Under what conditions have social movements driven changes in public policy and/or laws? What strategies have augmented their efforts to advance political change? Discuss by drawing on themes from the text, lectures and examples in current events (e.g., Metoo and Time’s Up; Black Lives Matter; Idle No More; Social Movements for Climate Change).
Then I want you to pick up a theme from each chapter and related to your topic, so there will be 5 themes (5 paragraphs), you will be analyzing and discussing how the theme and the topic is related to each other and you need to prove it.
