1. Ms. McKendry states infectious diseases are the largest global threat we are facing. Explain why you believe (or not) mobile devices are a relevant global public health tool and refute or support their use in systems thinking for infectious diseases.
2. On December 26, 2013, a 2-year-old boy in the remote Guinean village of Meliandou fell ill with a mysterious illness characterized by fever, black stools, and vomiting. He died 2 days later. Retrospective case-finding by WHO would later identify that child as West Africa’s first case of Ebola virus disease. The circumstances surrounding his illness were ominous. Explain the importance and impact of an early warning system on infectious disease.
3. Systems thinking is an approach that examines multiple influences on the development of an outcome or outcomes and attempts to bring them together in a coherent whole. Rachel McKendry suggests the leverage point is harnessing mobile devices and the inherent network to include social media and the phone camera. She shared many examples. Select your top three connectivity opportunities that support early detection and treatment from her examples. Explain why you believe your picks will have the greatest impact and will be acceptable to the public and public health.
4. In a positive feedback loop, one factor reinforces another to magnify the impact. Provide a positive feedback loop on the systems thinking discussed. At minimum there should be four nodes in your example.
5. Embed a picture or picture quote incorporating any topic of this discussion you are inspired to share. Provide a brief explanation as to why you selected this picture and the relevance from your perspective.
