GEL-7.02: Apply ethical reasoning to ethical issues within the field of study.
Company theft is extremely common, especially in small businesses (Walker, 20018). By addressing the “C” for control in the POLC model, businesses can try to prevent financial losses using a company code of ethics among other tools.
Codes of conduct or ethics (see Chapter 2, pp. 31–35) are provided by organizations to their employees via training and on their company websites or their annual reports. These codes affirm the ethical behavior expected of their employees. Codes of conduct assist organizations in controlling the behavior of their employees through employee training for compliance with regulations, company values, and expected norms of behavior.
Assume that as the owner of your own small business, you have been reflecting upon the article cited above and have decided that it will be important for you to establish your own code of ethics for your small business. You want to be proactive in preventing theft and other unethical behaviors as well as in establishing an ethical culture. Even if you do not currently have any employees, a code of ethics sets the standard for your business and can be modified as your business grows.
Checklist:
Explain why it will be important for you to create a foundation of integrity in your small business, how you will go about doing so, and why a code of ethics will be an important instrument you can use in this process.
Referring specifically to at least four of the five bulleted items listed beginning at the bottom of p. 32 and continuing at the top of p. 33 of your textbook, write your business code of ethics regarding your proposed business.
Explain the ethical reasoning you used in composing your code based on the ethical decision-making steps outlined on pp. 34–35 of your textbook. Be sure to specifically address at least three of the six steps.
Include at least one direct textual reference to the course textbook or other viable resource to support your discussion.
Complete all the checklist items using the APA-formatted template located in the Course Resources area. Submit your minimum 400–500-word, double-spaced, APA-formatted and citation styled response (include additional title and reference pages) to the Unit 9 Assignment Dropbox.
