From the EPUB Reader: Excerpts from “Witches, Witch-Hunting And Women” and “Our History is The Future”
Picking up from our discussion last week, we will be talking about not only violence, but the purpose and meaning of that violence as ascribed in our culture. Each of these chapters is a re-writing of history. As you read this history, how does it change your understanding of both the violence our society has inflicted and the people who were subjected to that violence? As we approach Halloween and Thanksgiving, how does this violence taint the popular understandings of witches and the relationship between settler colonialism and the indigenous peoples of the Americas?
In class we will also be discussing the concept of primitive accumulation, which Federici discusses and Estes implies. I’ve also included a longer excerpt from Federici’s book Caliban and the Witch in case it is something you are interested in exploring for your blog next week.
