For this paper I am to select an individual whom I consider the finest cavalry commander of the American Civil War and why? To make it simple I would choose Confederate Calvary leader Nathan Bedford Forrest or James Ewell Brown (JEB) Stuart as there is a lot of information on them and are considered among the best. But there are many other individuals on both the Union and Confederate sides. This paper can be broken up into three parts. Their early life and how they entered the Civil War. The main part will be to address why they are considered such a fine cavalry commander focusing on specific battles that witnessed this and tactics used to defeat the Union. Can address how the Union felt about the individual etc. Then the conclusion on why they are considered the best cavalry leader and their impact they have had on future wars if possible. Examples for Forrest of some of his known cavalry battles were: Fort Donelson Shiloh Chickamauga Battle of Brice’s Cross Roads Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville Need three sources, one being a primary source.
