For this assignment, find a picture book that represents each of the following content areas (five books total):
Grammar and vocabulary
Math
Science
Social Studies/History
The Arts (Visual Art/Music/Theatre)
Write an engaging introduction (one paragraph). Perhaps use a quote from one of the five books to grab your readers’ attention. Next, discuss why you think picture books revolutionize the teaching and learning experience. How would you apply this in your own classroom? If you have, what kinds of results have you had?
Write a paragraph for each book (five total body paragraphs) that discusses the following:
How does the book connect with the subject matter (grammar and vocabulary, math, science, social studies/history, and the arts) at the most fundamental level?
What details from the book support the curriculum (real or hypothetical)?
How do the illustrations support the material so that it is accessible to students?
Choose three (3) of the reasons (see above list) that picture books are useful across the curriculum and expand on how each reason is represented.
Write a conclusion (one paragraph) summarizing the collective content of your picture book selections. Are the applications you described consistent with only one reading level or grade, or would they be accessible to other ability or age groups? Are there any common themes? Are there themes other than what you extrapolated that are appropriate for the curriculum? Make sure that you bring everything full circle by touching on the point where you began writing.
