For my topic, I will be writing about Anna Blunden’s, “The Seamstress”, created in 1854. In this work of art, this seamstress is depicted in a green flowy dress, where she sits at a table praying looking outside of her window. From what I know about women at work in this era, the typical working conditions for women in the clothing trade system were very poor, such as women who were in the sewing industry. So, the seamstress in this work of art may be looking to the sky to pray to the Lord for better days to come, as she looks as if, she is being depicted as “overworking herself”. I believe she is also praying upon escape of her confinement within the interior of the window and looking for some sort of way to break through to the mysteries upon the outside of the workplace. I will be touching on the points of females being seen as housemaids of this time, while men were out doing work compared to women who weren’t married and how they were typically very independent, which means they didn’t rely on any man to call the shots for them. I will also being touching on the aspect of why the women of this time period had very few legal rights if they were married, in comparison to women who weren’t. Finally, I will talk about women’s social roles within the Victorian Era in England in comparison to men and how they were mostly on their side, but not all the time. I want to as well, answer the question upon why the aspect of the seamstress depicted in the window may have played a key role in how women would cope with their sorrows, in which the window, reflects a woman’s feelings or mistreatment by men, working or being overworked, and how they were seen in societies eyes within this time period.
