Find a publicly-traded merchandising company’s most recent annual report (10-K) by either going to their website and searching for “annual report” or “financial statements” OR google the company name and annual report (ex: search Target annual report) OR go to https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html
and search for the company. EDGAR will bring up a lot of options – be sure to select the 10-K for the company you have chosen. Make sure that you choose a merchandising company to properly answer all questions.
1. a. Open the annual report (10-K) and copy and paste the URL.
b. What company did you choose?
2. What was the company’s total sales revenue for the most recent year?
What was their cost of goods sold? What was their gross profit? Calculate their gross profit percentage. (If it says “in thousands”, add 3 zeros to the amount shown)
Clearly label all calculations.
3. What is the amount of total assets for the most recent date? What is the amount of total liabilities? (add 3 zeros if given “in thousands”)
4. Based on your review of the financial statements, would you invest in this company? Why or why not? Detail your decision-making process.
5. Review the notes to the financial statements. Based on your review of the financial statements and the notes, what risks do you think exist for this company?
6. Reflect on your research. How did your research compare to your initial impression of this company or its profitability before your research? What was the most significant thing you learned during this financial statement review?
Your work should be completed using Word or Excel with a minimum of 350 words.
