Field Experience Observation Guide What should you look for in your observation

Field Experience Observation Guide
What should you look for in your observations?
1. Read Chapter 11 before beginning your observations.
2. Use the report outline, Part II, along with the following, to guide your observation notes:
a. How would you describe the physical arrangement of the classroom? (See p. 384.)
b. How does the teacher “set the stage” for learning?  Is there a warm-up question or
activity?
c. What instructional materials are used?
d. How does the teacher use technology to support instruction?
e. How is learning time organized in the classroom? (See pp. 353-354.)
 How much time is allocated for the subject (math, science, etc.) or lesson?
 How much engaged learning time is provided?
f. What does the teacher do to ensure effective classroom management? (See numbers 1-
5 on pp. 355-357.)
g. What does the teacher do to prevent problems? (See pp. 357-359.)
h. What do you notice about times of transitions? (See p. 356.)
i. What questioning strategies does the teacher use? (See pp. 361-362.)
j. What examples of Bloom’s Taxonomy does the teacher use? (See pp. 362-363.)
k. How would you describe the teacher’s use of wait time? (See p. 365.)
l. What examples of teacher feedback do you notice? (See pp. 367-370.)
m.  What examples of cooperative learning are taking place? (See pp. 376-378.)
Note:  You may or may not observe all of the above in any one classroom visit or video.
However, these basic teaching and learning concepts will serve to guide your overall
observations and note taking.
3. As you read other chapters in the textbook, you may think of additional aspects to look for in
your observations.
