F‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍inal Paper (1800-2000 words): Using utilitarianism, the four principles approach, and the required book (Moreno & Gutman), compare how the theories (Utilitarianism & Beauchamp) would assess a topic that interested you in the book. (Writer –>see attached files, the book is by Moreno &Gutman , I have also attached the book pdf) Your paper should include: (1) A clear thesis (2) A brief overview of the relevant features of the theories you will use to justify your views on your chosen topic (3) Utilize assigned or outside resources to further justify your argument (4) Provide an argument for which theory would be better to use in this case, and why it is the better theory (note: the justification for this should be based on argument) Notes: This paper is asking you to do a lot in a little space. I suggest avoiding a long introductory paragraph. Simply set up the problem and explain your thesis. The theories do NOT have to disagree about the outcome. So do not force the theory to fit your view, let the theories shape the view presented. If you show the theories would agree that is still an interesting result, but even if they agree be sure to indicate which justification is more persuasive and why it is more persuasive. I am not asking for your opinion. In part 4, you do not even need to choose the theory you find most plausible. You want the argument that is the most persuasive for this topic. (In fact, it is a good exercise to try to persuasively present a view that differs from your own.) I am asking for a careful and thoughtful application and evaluation of the theories in a small amount of space. Use evidence from the book, the readings, and outside sources (must be peer reviewed journals). Papers are Due 11/19 at 11:59 pm. Papers should be uploaded as MS Word documents to Blackboard. On avoiding plagiarism: If you consult outside sources, including sources on the internet, you must also make sure that any ideas that you gather are properly footnoted, that direct quotations or paraphrases are clearly indicated as such, etc. The paper you submit must be your own work. Cases of plagiarism will be dealt with unsympathetically. Lateness: Late‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ papers will incur a grade penalty of 5 points per day. Late penalties start at 12 am, so make sure you finish your paper before the deadline. If your paper is late, you may email it to me as soon as you are finished to stop the grade penalties. Grading Criteria: Thesis: Does your paper contain a clearly stated thesis that you defend throughout the paper? (Note a good thesis provides a general account of what you will argue and why you will argue it.) Please note: While many disciplines teach students to avoid using “I” in papers, this is not true of most philosophy. A thesis may begin: “In this paper, I will argue…” Quality of Argumentation: How well do you defend your thesis? Do you avoid fallacious reasoning? Do you contradict yourself? Do you provide evidence for your position? Completeness: Do you do all the parts of the assignment? Understanding: Do you accurately characterize the important features of the chosen topic? Do you accurately characterize the theories and explain the features it uses for evaluation? Generally, does your paper demonstrate a clear understanding of the material? Organization and Clarity of Expression: Is your paper well organized and grammatically correct? Paper Structure: Do you have an introduction? Do your paragraphs have a clear point? Do you have a conclusion that summarizes what you have done? Do you include the relevant information (and only the relevant information)? Paragraph structure: Paragraphs should have a point. State the point of the paragraph at the beginning, and don’t stray from it. If you read a paragraph and you are not sure what the point was (or there are too many points), rewrite it (or break it into shorter paragraphs). Grammar: Do you avoid grammatical errors? Grammatical errors make it difficult to follow the points and arguments in a paper, so make sure that you edit your paper. Sources and citations: Do you include evidence from relevant sources (peer-reviewed journals)? When you are discussing the ideas, arguments, and positions of other authors, your paper should contain references to the texts, and direct quotations where appropriate. Are your citations correct ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍(AMA Format)?
