Explanatory Essay due November 14, 2021
Directions: You will craft a 1000 word double spaced essay: explaining how athletes are
exploited by coaches, parents, big business, and etc.
Essential questions:
● Should college athletes get paid for their hard work?
● Are parents putting too much pressure on their children?
● Are athletes playing hurt to keep their positions?
● Are the universities/businesses making promises to their athletes that are not being kept?
Requirements:
● A clear, concise, and defined thesis statement that occurs in the first paragraph of the essay
● Clear and logical transitions between the introduction, body, and conclusion
● Body paragraphs that include evidential support ( MLA Citations)
● Evidential support (whether factual, logical, statistical, or anecdotal)
● A conclusion that does not simply restate the thesis, but readdresses it in light
of the evidence provided.

Here is an example outline:
I. Introduction Paragraph
a. Broad opening statement about topic
b. Transition into your main idea
c. State your full thesis
II. Body Paragraph (As many paragraphs to cover all of your ideas)
a. Topic Sentence (main idea)
b. Introduction to Evidence (Identify the first document and summarize how it relates to the main
idea in 1-2 sentences)
c. Evidence from source #1 (quote from text written in MLA style)
d. Explanation of Evidence (explain what the evidence says and why it proves the topic sentence and
thesis in 2 sentences)
e. *Transition (compare/contrast the ideas in the first document to the second. Must use a transition word.)
f. Introduction of evidence (Identify the first document and summarize how it relates to the main idea in 1-2 sentences)
g. Evidence from Source #2 (quote from text written in MLA style)
h. Explanation of Evidence (explain what the evidence says and why it proves the topic sentence and
thesis in 2 sentences)
i. Closing (wrap- up ideas and reconnect to topic sentence)
V. Conclusion Paragraph
a. Remind your reader of your thesis by rewording your claim.
b. Reiterate why your argument is important.
c. Make a closing statement that relates back to your opening statement
