The prevalence of overweight and obesity-related chronic disease in America persists despite decade-long initiatives to promote healthy eating. Public health research and health professionals agree that interventions that target social, economic, environmental, and health policies are needed to address the growing epidemic of chronic diseases associated with unhealthy eating patterns.
Identify the state you are from or where you practice nursing.
Using your computer, search either the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps or the America’s Health Rankings website to locate health indicators/rankings for your state that reflect healthy eating (e.g., obesity, diabetes, food index, fruit and vegetable consumption, etc.).
List the indicator and ranking. How does your state ranking compare with the nation?
Identify at least two factors (social, economic, environmental, and/or health policy) that are barriers to healthy eating among individuals, families, or communities in the state?
What can health care professionals and communities do to reduce these barriers to healthy eating in your state?
