Everything changes with time and companies are no exception. Big corporations need to keep up with the times not only by changing their policies and products but also by polishing and modernizing their appearance. Relating to the customers is, in part, the purpose of a company’s logo.
Today there are many corporations, products, brands, services, agencies and other entities using an ideogram (sign, icon) or an emblem (symbol) or a combination of sign and emblem as a logo. However, only a few ideograms people see are recognized without a brand name, such as the famous Nokia or Starbucks logo.
I want you to take a look at the history of logo changes for ONE of the many well-known companies. You will be doing archival research on the internet that pinpoints one particular company’s logos changes over time–how the logo changed, why it changed, what was the reaction of the public, etc.
STEPS:
pick your company/logo
look up logo changes or logo timeline or history of company on the internet
use at least 5 different sources from the internet ( list your sources in a bibliography)
Properly formatted: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/chicago_manual_17th_edition/cmos_formatting_and_style_guide/web_sources.html (Links to an external site.)
Put together a timeline that shows the changes in the logos and the reasons behind the changes using information from all of your sources. (do the sources mention different things? or all the same?)
in some cases the public’s reaction to a logo change may be interesting.
keep in mind the things we learned about branding or having the visual symbol “tell” a story about the product. What components come into play? These would all play a role in change also.
shapes, typeface, color, etc.
Are there any “hidden” meanings or secrets in the logo?
