Essay: Research-Enriched Essay Guidelines
The purpose of this assignment is to help you augment the skills you’ve gained in creating effective content, organization, and language/design in your writing with research and a secondary source.
Following are instructions for the Essay: Research-Enriched Essay which is due in Week 10 of this course. You can begin working on this essay now, but please keep in mind that (like the last essay) you will be submitting work that will help you develop this essay between now and Week 10. For example, this week, you will submit an assignment that will help you brainstorm for this essay, and in Week 9, you will submit work about your sources. You will need to complete those assignments before you write the final draft of the essay itself.
Research Requirement: This paper is a research-enriched essay. That means that you are required to use a peer-reviewed secondary source in it. Your secondary source should be a journal article located through the LibGuides/Galileo databases; other internet sources do not count for this requirement. You should use this source to support a claim that you’re making in your essay. Thus, your Works Cited page should include at least two sources: the peer-reviewed journal article you have located and the essay (topics listed below) from our textbook (They Say, I Say). Your essay may include additional journal articles as sources beyond this requirement
Plagiarism Reminder: You may not use outside sources for this essay beyond those described in the Research Requirement section unless you get prior approval from me. You may not plagiarize – which means consulting internet sources, written sources, or any other kind of source and appropriating its ideas or words without proper acknowledgement. Essays which plagiarize (intentionally or unintentionally) will receive a 0 in accordance with Brenau policy. Again, this essay must represent your own, original work.
Directions: Write a well-developed, thoughtful essay in response to one of the topics below. Pay particular attention to content and organization, including your introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion. In order to achieve higher grades, display critical thinking in your argument and use of evidence as well as sophisticated use of language. .
Choose one of the two topics below to write about. Note that both topics require you to quote from both an essay in our textbook AND a secondary source (journal article). Do NOT use websites as your resources. Those are not considered peer-reviewed sources.
Write an essay analyzing the ways digital technologies have influenced your own intellectual development, drawing from Thompson’s essay “Smarter Than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better” and other readings from our textbook’s chapter “Are We in A Race Against the Machine?” Include an additional secondary source to support or illustrate your claims from the library databases.
The chapter 18, “Are We in A Race Against the Machine?” analyzes the ways in which technology negatively or positively impacts our development. Choose one kind of technology present in the world today and make your own argument: Does it positively or negatively contribute to the world today? Note that all body paragraphs must utilize quotations and you should plan to draw extensively on one of the essays in this chapter plus one additional secondary source to support or illustrate your claims from the library databases.
Length: This essay should be between 1200-1500 words. You may use the “Word Count” feature in Word to determine the length of your essay. Essays less than 1200 words do not meet the Language/Design requirement under Competency on the Brenau Writing Rubric and, therefore, will not pass. A Works Cited page does not count towards the length requirement.
Formatting: Double-space your entire paper. Use Times New Roman 12- point font. Use 1-inch margins, and be careful: Some programs, especially older versions of Word, have default margins of 1.25 inches. Be sure to change your margins to 1 inch. If you do not know how to do this, contact me and I will help you.
Citation Style: Use MLA style for this essay (and all work in this class). Your essay should include a title. Cite all quotations or paraphrases of source material using MLA style in-text citations, and, if a direct quotation, quotation marks. Format your paper according to MLA style.
