Write a 4-5 page essay (approximately1600-1900 words)that offers a critique of a written text chosen from among the options given. Develop a thesis statement. The essay that results from your analysis should present your perspective clearly and convincingly for your readers.
•Your critique should not only help your readers understand the text as its author likely intended it to be understood, but it will also provide your own thinking on the text.
•You are not writing your own thoughts on the topic of the text; rather, you are writing about what the author is thinking about his or her topic and how the author conveys that through language. In other words, your thesis should be a claim about how the text works as a piece of writing, and/or a claim about how the text creates meaning beyond what it explicitly states.You may also choose to use the reading as a lens to deepen your understanding of another text or even a personal experience. We will troubleshoot these issuesin small groups or in individual meetings with me.
•To develop your critique, you should work directly with the language of the text, demonstrating that you can “speak the language of the text.” To this end, you should use summary, paraphrase, and quotations of the text’s ideas and language in appropriate ways(use the “quote sandwich”technique).These are some of the main skills that this assignment is designed to help you practice and improve.
•You should really dig into specific passages in the text. Your ideas about the essay you are critiquing will be developed primarily through pointing out passages in the text and then explaining your analytical thinking about the significance of those passages for your thesis. In other words, your descriiption of what the writer is doing—the points they are making and how they are making them—will be essential. In other words,your own thinking should be grounded in the text.
•Remember to build in to your essay a productive balance between “show me!” (concrete details/examples) and “so what?” (analytical observations about the significance/meaning of those details).
