Following the diagnostic summary, in which summarizing arguments and focused on sentence-level clarity, Needless to say, you are also expected to pay attention to clarity, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics in this assignment.
Write a paper about Ted Chiang’s “The Truth of Fact, The Truth of Feeling.” Develop an argument-based interpretation of a well-defined image (e.g. nature), aspect of style (e.g. formal characteristic such as parallel narratives, or figure of speech such as metaphor), or theme (e.g. hierarchy between writing and speech; memory; self; colonialism) in the short story. As you think about your topic, start by asking yourself “What does the text say about this theme? How does it say it? How do these two answers speak to each other?” or “What role does this image/aspect of style play in the text? What do I make of it?” (You can see that you are already connecting form with content by asking these questions; Then sharpen your tentative answer and make a well-written argument that tells us something less obvious about the short story. Although the main part of this paper should focus on the short story, you are also expected to mention (use quotations when necessary) two or more other readings (including the videos, excluding the Manual and Hayot) from Week 2 to Week 6 in your paper to serve as theoretical support in your argumentation or as scholarship upon which you build your argument.
All papers should follow standard formatting: Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides. Your paper needs to be written in MLA style, with a title, works cited, etc. Please refer to the Manual, entries 32–34, pp. 129–186, especially the sample paper, 34b, pp. 179–186. You don’t need to quote external sources in this paper, but you should cite our readings in MLA format.
