Essay #2: Visual Rhetoric and the Evaluation Claim<
Building off our study of rhetoric and how arguments are crafted, we are now going to sharpen our critical thinking apparatus by analyzing visual rhetoric and complex theory.<

The “tool” or “instrument” we will be using for this essay will be Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Understanding that the film could be analyzed and dissected from multiple angles, our central focus here will be to unpack the visual rhetoric of Peele’s work and determine whether it furthers Michel Foucault’s theoretical exploration of the “panopticon.”<
<
Essay Prompt:<
Using Jordan Peele’s Get Out as your primary source and Michel Foucault’s “Panopticism” as your secondary source, analyze and determine if the film is a valid evolution of the concept of the “panopticon” as defined by Foucault. Since the film is your primary source, it will be crucial to unpack the visual rhetoric employed in the film.<

Essay Tips:<
5 pages minimum and MLA format, por favor. Works Cited would be nice (so you could get some practice in (please review Purdue Owl (Links to an external site.) or see me in office hours if you need help).<
While I don’t expect you to purchase the film, please consider renting and creating detailed notes. Please don’t worry about time stamping quotes or examples from the film.<

Images from the film may be useful, but not mandatory. Be careful to be aware of audience and not assume the image is making the claim for you. Also, keep in mind that images do not count towards page limit. Your words are more important anyway!<
Be critical! Bring something new to the table! Always teach through your writing.<
Unfortunately I have to say it, but be careful looking for reviews or video essays (remember those??) on the film. I have seen too many to count and “borrowing” from anywhere else without proper credit is plagiarism and may not even engage what I am asking for here.<
As always, please consider seeing me in office hours and/or visit the Writing Center (Links to an external site.)!<
