RE: Discussion –
Working as a nurse, it is good to have a portfolio that shows your skills, achievements and professional experience. A portfolio is used to plan continuing education and professional development (Burns, 2018). A portfolio shows evidence of how an individual has developed both personally and professionally. It is therefore a showcase for past accomplishments and achievements, but can also be used as a dynamic vehicle to enable future career and development planning (Burns, 2018). A nurse should create a portfolio because it shows and give the nurse self-promotion, evidence outcomes and structure, and direction (Burns, 2018). Overall there are so many good benefits of why you should have a portfolio.
The first strategy I will use to incorporate academic activities into my professional development goal is attend to conferences and obtain professional membership to the American Nurse Association (ANA), American Med Spa Association, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), and American Holistic Nurse Association. I can add my Family Nurse Practitioner Degree to my portfolio once I graduate in winter 2023. I can also add my Nurse Practitioner license once I pass the exam on my portfolio. I can add different states of where I can practice as a Nurse Practitioner on my portfolio. I can add my Basic Life Support certification and Advance Life Support certifications to my portfolio as well. Nursing certification provides the nurses with professional credibility and specialized knowledge. Certifications help nurses and show higher clinical competence levels. According to Murphy (2020), activities such as specialty certification, additional degrees, attending conferences, publishing scholarly work, committee membership, are each utilized to create professional development.
The second strategy I will use to incorporate academic activities into my professional development goal is to offer mentor or preceptor for novice nurse on my unit. I can put down on my portfolio continue education on diabetes, heart disease, strokes overall metabolic syndrome. Also continue education on immunizations and vaccines. I can do community activities such as host and teach about metabolic syndrome and how to avoid it. Overall, there are so many things you can put on your portfolio such as specialty certifications, practicums, higher degrees, conferences, committee membership, clinical and professional experience. Also, be a member of professional organizations, obtain more state licenses, leadership activities such as preceptor, community activities and services, and continuing education certifications.
My goals align with the University’s emphasis on social change. For example having a Family Nurse Practitioner degree in different states I can host events and educate communities on the importance of hydration, healthy eating, and how to avoid metabolic syndrome. Also being a preceptor for novice nurses shows social change. Walden University states that in 1970 Bernie and Rita Turner sought to build a learning community where knowledge could be applied to solve key societal challenges. Their vision is to empower students to make a difference by confronting those challenges where they live, in their professions, and on a global scale. (Walden, n.d.). Participating in committees on my job, being an active member within a professional organization such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), and/or volunteering in other roles within my community. The challenges I am intended to address in my community. The main goal of Walden University concerns social change practices at a global level. My strategies aim to improve the lives of my patients and overall different communities.
