Essay Requirements & Parameters
Students should include and demonstrate the following in Essay Two:
Understanding and mastery of MLA Formatting,
Understanding and mastery of basic Grammar and Writing Skills (at the level of Eng. 103/WR 2),
Evidence of Editing, Proofreading, and Revision prior to Oct. 20/21 submission,

Discussion of Aristotelian Terms, including Ethos, Pathos, Logos, and Kairos,
Discussion of two class themes and readings and 2 supporting quotes from different class readings.
Written Argument Overview
Here is where you will provide a summary of the first source (the regular type of argument – written) you will be analyzing in Essay Two. Explain what the source is about and provide some context for those who have not read it. Here is what to include in this section:
a one or two paragraph summary of the source’s content,
explain what the source’s Stance on Your Portfolio Topic is,
include a direct quote that best represents the source’s stance,
express the Claim and Claim Type (fact, value, or policy), and
include a direct quote from the source that best represents this claim (and explain why this is a claim of fact, value, or policy).
Analysis of Evidence/Support in [Written Argument’s Title]
Here is where you will analyze several examples of the types of evidence/support used in your first source. Here is what to include in this section:
discuss at least three different pieces/types of Evidence/Support the source uses and whether you thought these types of evidence were effective (and why),
discuss the ways the source Appeals to the Needs/Values of its audience,
explain and discuss at least one Warrant that can be found in the source, and
provide a direct quote that best expresses the warrant.
Analysis of Aristotelian Elements in [Written Source’s Title]
This section should include discussion of how the written argument includes or has examples of Ethos, Pathos, Logos, and/or Kairos (include at least three of the four Aristotelian elements). Please include the following in this section:
an example in the form of a direct quote along with explanation of how the source utilized/included either Ethos, Pathos, Logos, or Kairos,
an example or descriiption along with explanation of how the source included either Ethos, Pathos, Logos, or Kairos, and
an example or descriiption along with explanation of how the source included either Ethos, Pathos, Logos, or Kairos.
