1. As a leader, I believe that prior to COVD-19, various media and key leaders rarely used Emotional Intelligence skills. From my perspective, our leaders and media outlets mostly represented the worst parts of our society. Most social media platforms were not kindness based and often showcased the worst parts of our society.
During the current COVID-19 pandemic, media and key leaders have used Emotional Intelligence in ways that have brought empathy, flexibility, and transparency to the forefront. Those I believe hold high leadership positions in society such as presidents, government officials, athletes, and entertainers since the pandemic, have released messages to their followers about dealing with hard times, leaning on family (from afar), and having hope through these uncertain times. These are examples of Emotional Intelligence because they demonstrate messages of managing fears and emotions, being logical and responsive to others, and encouraging one another. Not everyone may believe that their efforts are genuine and a lot of political figureheads have been divisive. Despite this, I have seen leaders release statements attempting to convey compassion for their constituents during these hard times. Yes, these “positive” sentiments were much later in the pandemic, but I choose to recognize the responsible leaders who put people before pandemic political pandering. In popular social media, we have seen our cyber-neighbors make social distancing an intimate concept and togetherness has become the theme of almost every media’s advertising. I hope that our leaders can continue to embrace the best parts of themselves and remember that with emotional intelligence, we can thrive as a world community.
2. Disappointment is the first thing that came to mind when determing how various media and key leaders reacted/behaved during this pandemic. Initially I checked myself without even knowing I was using EI. I took a moment to check my judgement. I did not have enough information about what was happening to do more than make assumptions. I wanted to ensure I was “distinguising what the people in leadership were actually doing as opposed to how I felt about them.” The reading distinguished that as developing regard for others. However, after a few weeks of watching the process and the lack of urgency in reaction to a worldwide Covid-19 breakout I knew my feelings were justified. Our leadershilp and media lacked not only self-awareness but awareness of others, and their suffering. The failure to act and respond accordingly by both entities included the neglect of skills such as noticing how others felt and genuinely caring about others feelings. The most aggregious act would be lack of empathic listening which is what most employees, peers and co workers appreciate because it allows people to feel validated and heard.
