During a maternity rotation, a student attended a woman having a Cesarean section. Her obstetrician and husband, plus another student and a nurse were present. At the moment of birth, the obstetrician proudly held the baby up and stated, “This is a Kodak moment!” referring to the camera and film company. In his excitement, the student took at least three pictures with his phone, promising to send the pics to the parents. The parents seemed pleased but later, the other student reported this incident to the student’s instructor. The instructor reported the student to the college’s administration. The student was suspended, pending an honor board. You are a member of this board. Discuss the issues surrounding this incident from an ethical viewpoint involving society’s attitude toward social media, taking pics and posting, HIPAA, privacy and confidentiality. What was the role of the parents? How was the obstetrician involved? What was the thought process behind reporting the student up the chain of command?
