Learning Goals and Grading
This is a Credit/NoCredit assignment. You’ll get credit for making your best, good faith effort with the material.
Learning goals are for you to practice your critical reading, learn from peers about note taking, and develop a system for recording important information on our assigned readings that you can refelct on later for writing assignments.
Lecture video 1: How to do a Close Reading: URL; https://youtu.be/I_hhMeE7Osw
5 minutes – aimed at teachers. Gives a good, brief definition of what “close reading” is at a fundamental level, and offers several strategies for annotating and questioning texts in multiple readings.
Lecture Video Two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZwDGCMbsts – 8 minutes – aimed at students; offers a lengthier explanation of the deeper intricacies of Close Reading. This video contains an “assignment” at the end to read a short story, but you can use our readings on “close reading” and “stop close reading”)
VIDEO 3 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-2IMUWYgyo – 55 minutes – A Walk Through of Close Reading with an online article
This is a long one – one hour but it’s VERY good if close reading is totally new to you and/or if you feel like your reading skills need a little practice.
