Dear Sir, madam,
I have MSc. In veterinary surgery and I am working on PhD now. I’ve performed experimental total pancreatectomy (surgical removal of entire pancreas) successfully on 6 dogs to induce an experimental model of diabetes mellitus to study this disease in human.
The study started by induction of a full diabetic state without treatment with insulin) in one animal (not included in the other 6 treated pancreatectomized animals). This animal lived just for 7 days with improper wound healing.
The shared blood vessels supplying both pancreas and duodenum (superior and inferior pancreaticoduodenal arteries had been removed and blood supply to duodenum maintained by preserving the recurrent duodenal branch of the right gastroepiploic artery.
I think that cutting the superior pancreaticoduodenal is new approach because I didn’t find any reference mentioned this method and all of them kept this artery to assure enough blood supply to the duodenum after excising the pancreas.
All treated 6 animals remained alive in spite of hyperglycemia by injecting insulin subcutaneously once daily. After that, insulin injection stopped. This regimen lasted one month in 4 animals and less than one month in the other two dogs when the animals had been died. At autopsy, no pancreatic remnant found In dog no.5.
Serum samples obtained from most animals before the surgical operation for biochemical analysis. In the last two days of insulin treatment period, blood collected from all of the dogs for serum biochemistry and urine strip test performed also to examine the urine. After that insulin treatment had been stopped and blood sample had been taken almost daily and the strip test repeated several days to investigate the effect of insulin withdrawal till the animal had been died.
So, according to the above information I want to concentrate on the surgical aspect of the topic as much as possible in my PhD thesis, then to move to the clinical and biochemical part of the subject.
