Critical Response #10 Questions: The Future of Cultural
Studies and Brainstorm
Instructions: Don’t forget to include quotes
and page numbers and to use analysis and evaluation of the assigned texts for
the week. Refer to the grading rubric and sample for Critical Responses in Week 1
if you need to. Respond to 2 posts 50 words each.
Part 1: Answer ONE of the questions
below:
1). According to Ono and Pham and what you can make of
Puar’s argument, what is the role of oppositional institutions versus
individual activism. What are the limits to what organizations can achieve?
2). According to Puar, what are the limits of oppositional
institutions after 9/11 in their participation in model minority and queer
exceptionalism and “homonationalism” specifically?
3). Discuss any ideas that you found significant or
questions that you had about Puar’s analysis, which is admittedly extremely
difficult to follow.
4). Explore the limits to representation and identity
politics in cultural studies, especially the focus on the visual. According to
Puar, what additional relationships do we need to consider beyond visual
culture and why?
5). What is the cultural significance of the turban and why
does Puar think it has become the focus of hate crimes? How does the turban
reveal the limits to identity politics and approaches that focus on “good”
representations?
Part 2: Brainstorm
Brainstorm ideas based on the topics provided in
the Guidelines for your Final Projects, the Cultural Justice Toolkit, or you
may choose your own topic. Free-write
for 10-15 minutes on that topic. Post a 200-word Brainstorm in your Critical
Response #10
