Critical evaluation involves examining the elements of a text to determine its effectiveness and, ultimately, the overall effectiveness of the text in achieving its purpose. For this assignment, you will utilize what you’ve learned about critical thinking, source credibility, language use, and argument development to analyze the effectiveness of an instructor-provided article. Your evaluation should include an analysis of relevant counterevidence, so you will need to find a credible source that presents the counterargument.
You will accomplish the following objectives:
Analyze college-level and professional texts using critical thinking strategies
Develop information literacy skills by evaluating research and documenting information from sources
Compose an organized, coherent, and well-developed essay integrating summary and response
PROCESS AND RESOURCES
This project involves the following steps:
Read and annotate the assigned article
Review principles of information literacy and APA formatting
Locate supplementary written source(s) approved by instructor
Complete Unit 4 planning for the essay (e.g., Graphic Organizer)
Complete and submit final Unit 4 Critical Evaluation Essay
STRUCTURE AND CONTENT
Title Page (per APA student paper format)
Introduction: Identify the text (author, title, date, source) and the overall claim/thesis. Explain the author’s purpose and audience. Briefly summarize the article and end with your overall evaluation thesis statement.
Body (Evaluation): Include APA section headers
Paragraph(s) evaluating evidence and counterevidence. Explain your evaluation using critical thinking concepts, specific quotes and/or paraphrases from the text, and where appropriate, information from your supplementary source(s). Provide in-text citations for all source information.
Paragraph(s) evaluating language use. Explain your evaluation using critical thinking concepts, specific quotes and/or paraphrases from the text, and where appropriate, information from your supplementary source(s). Provide in-text citations for all source information.
Paragraph(s) evaluating author credibility. Explain your evaluation using critical thinking concepts, specific quotes and/or paraphrases from the text, and where appropriate, information from your supplementary source(s). Provide in-text citations for all source information.
Conclusion: Concluding paragraph should restate the overall evaluation and re-cap the reasoning behind your conclusion. No new information should be included in the conclusion, but your conclusion should provide a sense of closure.
