The purpose of concept analysis is to distinguish between the defining attributes of a concept and its irrelevant attributes, refine ambiguous concepts in theory, examine information prior to research and theory building activities, prior to tool/scale development, in development of nursing diagnosis.
II. Concept Analysis Process
1. selection of a concept
2. determine the aim or purpose of analysis
3. identify all the uses of the concept (definitions)
4. determine the defining attributes
5. construct cases
6. identify antecedents and consequences
7. define empirical referents
III. Defining characteristics (critical attributes)
1. cluster of attributes most frequently associated with the concept
2. helps differentiate the concept from others similar or related to it
3. characteristics you see over and over again in the literature
Example: Pregnancy
While there are presumptive and probable signs of pregnancy, the positive or diagnostic signs include:
fetal heart tones

Example: birth is the expected consequence of pregnancy
