The company I have chosen to analyze is The Sumter Item which is a newspaper in Sumter, South Carolina.
This assignment requires you to study all aspects of a media outlet’s operations. You may choose any radio or television station, cable or broadcast network, newspaper, magazine, advertising agency, public relations firm, or other media outlet for this assignment. If you are studying a newspaper, you will need to analyze multiple issues from different days of the week. For a radio or television station, you will need to watch at least 48 hours to measure the commercial load at different times of day. For an agency, you will need to know the agency’s clients, then look at the output available to the general public. The goal of the assignment is to gain an in-depth understanding of one firm’s finances, products, organizational structure, etc. To this end, the report must include 1) a financial analysis (with estimates of revenue & expenses), 2) an “output” analysis (including relevant cost factors, sources of content, and measures of effectiveness), 3) a positioning analysis (detailing promotional and sales strategies), and 4) an organizational analysis (examining the organizational structure of the firm). This report should NOT include proprietary information, nor should companies be asked to provide proprietary information. Rather, the goal of the assignment is to analyze the station as an outsider (perhaps as a potential purchase), using publicly available information such as rate cards, ratings, and analysis of commercial time to provide an in-depth picture of a station’s position in their market. DO NOT ASK THE COMPANY TO PROVIDE CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION, but you may ask for information on rates, audience size or client base, and other information readily available to anyone in the industry. The report should be at least 2000 words.
