1. Why does Chesler argue that women more frequently embark on careers as psychiatric patients because they feel more at home within them? Do you agree with her assertion that it is often patriarchal structures of oppression that drive women mad? Why or why not? This text was published in 1972. Are these arguments still relevant today?

White middle class women, especially in the 1950’s and 60’s, were more vigorously targeted by psychiatric practices for any display of abnormality, while women of color were already assumed to be innately depraved, aggressive, and/or hypersexual, so they were often ignored by psychiatry. In our current society, women of color continue to have difficulty accessing treatment for mental and emotional distress.
